The Currency of Time: A Reflection on Life Before Social Media

Growing up in a small rural town, I learned early on that time is our most precious currency. 20 years ago, my days were full of simple joys and real connections. The digital noise that now fills our lives did not touch them. We didn't scroll through Instagram, TikTok, or X. Our mornings began with the sunrise, not a phone screen. Life was slower and more deliberate.

Back then, life was different.

We had TVs as our only major distraction. Even they were an occasional escape, not a constant presence. My childhood had slow talks with family and friends. We spoke face-to-face.

It was the norm, not the exception.

The concept of "likes" and "followers" was nonexistent. We valued each other for who we were, not for the number of digital affirmations we received.

We spent our days outside, exploring the vast landscapes that surrounded our home. We played in the fields, built forts in the woods, and swam in the creek. There was freedom in those unstructured hours.

It let our imaginations run wild.

We were present in every moment, fully engaged with the world around us. Time felt abundant. It wasn't taken by the endless scroll of curated lives and algorithm-driven content.

Today, it feels like time slips through our fingers faster than ever. There's an endless stream of information. The pressure to stay always connected has created a culture of immediacy. We're always β€œon,” always available, and always distracted. This perpetual partial attention not only erodes our sense of time. It also harms our well-being.

I often find myself longing for the simplicity of those earlier days. The conversations lasted for hours. No phone buzzed. Mornings were slow. We sipped coffee on the porch. Evenings were under the stars. No screen glared. We were happier because our time was our own, unclaimed by the relentless demands of social med

ia and smartphones.

In those days, social gatherings were about connection.

Potluck dinners, community fairs, and bonfires brought us together. They did so in ways that digital interactions never could. We shared stories. We laughed and supported each other. This created bonds. They've lasted a lifetime. A tweet or a post can't replicate the richness of these experiences.

Reflecting on my rural upbringing, it’s clear that we were better off. Our lives weren't dominated by the digital world. We had the luxury of boredom, which often sparked creativity and introspection. We valued our time. I spent it on things that mattered: relationships, hobbies, and personal growth.

In the absence of social media, we found joy in the little things. A walk through the woods. The first snow of the season. The smell of fresh-cut grass. I savour these moments. We lived fully in the present, without the need to document and share every experience. There was contentment in simply being. It was without the constant comparison to others that social media fosters.

As we navigate the digital age, it’s crucial to remember that time is the most valuable currency we have. Unlike money, we cannot earn more of it; once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. We can take our time back from social media. Then, we can reconnect with what truly matters. We can rediscover the happiness of a life grounded in real, meaningful experiences.

The challenge today is to find a balance. To use technology as a tool without allowing it to dominate our lives. It's about being intentional with our time. We must set boundaries and focus on in-person over virtual interactions. It's about remembering the value of a handwritten letter. Also, the value of a heartfelt conversation and a day without digital distractions.

Reclaiming our time means making conscious choices about how we spend it. It means disconnecting from the endless noise. And, it means reconnecting with ourselves, our loved ones, and the natural world. It means finding joy in the present. It means appreciating life's simple pleasures. And, it means living in a way that honours the precious currency of time.

In doing so, we've rediscovered the joy of a life grounded in real experiences. We can find a sense of peace and fulfillment that no amount of social media validation can provide. And we can ensure that we spend our time, the most valuable currency we have, in ways that enrich our lives.

An Invitation to Reflect:

I invite you to ponder the role of social media in your own life.

A nostalgic rural landscape from the 1990s, featuring a small town with simple wooden houses, open fields, and children playing outside. The sun is rising, casting a warm, golden glow over the scene. In the foreground, a group of friends is sitting on a porch, engaged in a relaxed conversation and sipping coffee. Traditional elements like a TV antenna on a house, handwritten letters on a table, and a potluck dinner setup in the background are visible. The overall atmosphere exudes peace, connection, and contentment, reflecting a time when life was simpler and time felt abundant. Elements from the 1990s such as period-appropriate clothing, a classic 90s car, and a boombox are included.
