Our story begins in the aftermath of an enriching chapter teaching English in Quebec - C.H. in the serene Lac St. Jean and myself in historic Quebec City. As participants in the Odyssey program, our paths crossed, entwining our fates in a narrative marked by adventure and the pursuit of discovery.
The conclusion of this professional journey was merely the prologue to an adventure that would further entangle our lives, leading us to embark on a memorable odyssey across the Maritimes in 2012.
The overnight train rattled into the Amherst station, pulling us out of the cobbled streets of Quebec City and into the embrace of Nova Scotia. C.H. and I, both fresh from our enriching time teaching English, exchanged a smile, the thrill of a new adventure tangible in the air. This wasn't just the end of the Odyssey program; it was the prologue to a story whispered by the windswept shores and rolling hills of the Maritimes.
Amherst was a charming transition, a quaint town nestled amidst vibrant summer foliage. Renting a car, our trusty steed for the journey ahead, felt like a rite of passage. Soon, we crossed the massive 10km long Confederation Bridge, a marvel of engineering that spanned the Northumberland Strait.
The salty spray kissed the shores as we crossed, the vast expanse of the water stretching out before us. Prince Edward Island materialized like a dream, a tapestry of green fields and red clay roads.
Our cozy hostel was a charming converted Victorian house, its porch swings inviting us to relax after a long day of travel. The owner, a kind and welcoming dude, greeted us with a warm smile and a pot of steaming tea. We soon found ourselves chatting animatedly with him, sharing stories of our time in Quebec and our plans for exploring the island.
As the conversation flowed, I couldn't help but notice how C.H.'s eyes sparkled with enthusiasm and how her laughter filled the room. It was a side of her I hadn't seen before, and it sent a strange flutter through my heart.
Later that evening, while I was engrossed in a book in the common room, C.H. announced she was going for a run to explore the nearby harbour. Time seemed to stretch on as I waited for her return. My initial concern morphed when she didn't return after an hour. Visions of her getting lost or injured flooded my mind.
Relief washed over me as I realized she was safe and sound. It turned out she had simply gotten lost in time while relaxing, enjoying the tub and the view of the harbour. That night, as we lay in our separate beds, the silence between us was thick with unspoken emotions.
The incident had shaken me, but it had also revealed a depth of connection I hadn't acknowledged before. The way my heart had raced with worry, the relief that flooded me upon finding her safe, it all pointed towards something more than just friendship.
The Anne of Green Gables Museum was a nostalgic haven. We walked hand-in-hand through the reconstructed farmhouse, the fictional world of Lucy Maud Montgomery coming alive around us. Laughter filled the air as we imagined ourselves as Anne and Gilbert, forging an unlikely bond.
Back on the Northumberland straight ferry, a comfortable silence settled between us, a language unspoken but deeply felt. The salty spray of the sea mingled with the scent of pine carried by the wind, creating a unique sensory experience. As the ferry glided across the water, the setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, a breathtaking backdrop to our unspoken conversation.
The Cabot Trail, and Bear on the Lake Inn our next destination, snaked along the Cape Breton coastline, a ribbon of asphalt winding through a breathtaking tapestry of mountains and crashing waves. And Two Tittles Point, with its rugged beauty, left us speechless.
Imagine yourself driving down a road that looks like it was painted by the greatest artist ever.

This place isn't just a destination; it's an embrace of warmth, where the air is thick with laughter and the welcoming spirit of its people.
Nestled on a cliff's edge, overlooking the vast, azure waters of the Atlantic, The Keltic Lodge stands as a beacon of hospitality. It's not just the stunning vistas or the pristine natural beauty that captivates the soul but the profound sense of connection—to the land, the sea, and the tapestry of stories that make up its history.
Venturing into Chéticamp, a vibrant Acadian community a stone's throw from the lodge, is like being swept into a whirlwind of cultural richness. The Acadian culture, with its deep roots in this part of Nova Scotia, is a living, breathing testament to resilience and joy.
The streets hum with the rhythm of life, where the French dialect, a testament to their enduring heritage, fills the air, mingling seamlessly with the scent of salt and earth.
Fiddle music, a cornerstone of both Acadian and Celtic traditions, serves as the heartbeat of Chéticamp. It's in the lively pubs and community halls where the magic happens—where the bow meets string, and melodies born of old-world charm and new-world vibrancy compel you to tap your feet. This music isn't just heard; it's felt, a pulsating echo of a people's journey, joys, and sorrows.
The Keltic Lodge, with its open arms, acts as a gateway to not just the breathtaking landscapes of Cape Breton but to a cultural immersion that's rare and precious. It's a place where the past and present dance in harmony, and every visitor is invited to join in, to learn, and to be a part of something much bigger than themselves.
To truly understand the essence of this place, one must experience it firsthand—the warmth of the people, the richness of Acadian culture, and the unbridled joy of Celtic music. It's a journey back in time and a celebration of life that's ongoing, a reminder of the beauty in diversity and the strength found in unity.
The Keltic Lodge isn't just a stay; it's an adventure into the heart of Celtic and Acadian traditions, a place where every corner tells a story, and every face has a story to share. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of the Maritimes, a place where warmth and welcome know no bounds.
Every breathtaking vista, and every shared laugh, became a chapter in our visual diary. With each frame of our YouTube video, we documented not just the landscape, but the growing connection between us. Amidst the stunning backdrop of Cape Breton, a different kind of exploration was unfolding - a personal journey of unspoken emotions and a dawning awareness of our compatibility.
The Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort nestled within the heart of a lush Canadian landscape, presents a retreat that speaks directly to the soul. Here, within this enclave of tranquillity, one finds themselves immersed in a blend of simplicity and adventure that's hard to find elsewhere. The accommodations, especially the yurts, serve not just as a place to rest but as a portal to the celestial dance above, offering an unobstructed view of the heavens that reminds one of the vastness and beauty of the universe.
As dawn breaks, the resort becomes a playground for the spirited and the adventurous. Kayaking across the glass-like surfaces of nearby lakes, one can't help but feel a deep connection to the natural world, a serenity that's both exhilarating and calming.
Embarking on the Tabernak Trail, C/H and I stepped into a realm where nature’s untouched beauty was on full display. This trail, renowned for its rugged allure, offered more than just a hike; it was a journey that tested our resolve and rewarded us with the sublime beauty of the natural world.
Our adventure began under the canopy of ancient trees, their leaves whispering secrets of the ages. The trail unwound before us like a serpentine path, beckoning us deeper into its heart. With each step, we were drawn into a landscape where the air was alive with the chorus of birds, and the earth beneath our feet told stories of countless travellers who had trodden this path before us.
The Tabernak Trail is not for the faint of heart. Its paths, fraught with challenges, are a testament to the wildness of the land. Steep ascents followed by sudden descents, rocky outcrops that demanded careful navigation, and streams that had to be crossed without the aid of bridges were just some of the hurdles we faced. Yet, with each obstacle overcome, C/H and I found ourselves invigorated, our spirits buoyed by the raw beauty and the silent strength of the wilderness around us.
It was amidst this untamed splendour that we found ourselves momentarily disoriented. The trail, once so distinct, seemed to merge with the wilderness, its markers swallowed by the forest's dense embrace. Yet, this moment of uncertainty was not a setback but a serendipitous turn in our journey. Lost from the path, we found ourselves immersed in the very essence of adventure, where the unknown lay around every bend and nature’s majesty was revealed in its full glory.
In our wanderings, we stumbled upon vistas that took our breath away. From the edge of a cliff, we gazed upon valleys carved by the hands of time, their depths shrouded in mists that danced with the light. Streams, their waters crystal clear, sang songs of ancient journeys as they wound their way through the verdant landscape.
Finding our way back to the trail was a moment of triumph, a testament to our resilience and the unspoken bond that had formed between us in the face of nature’s grandeur. As we continued our trek, the trail seemed to embrace us, its challenges now familiar waypoints on our journey.
Reaching the end of the Tabernak Trail, C/H and I were not the same people who had set out that morning. We had journeyed through the heart of nature’s domain, faced its challenges, and emerged not just victorious but transformed. The trail offered us a glimpse into the sublime, a connection to the world that was profound and ineffable.
In the end, the Tabernak Trail was more than a path through the wilderness; it was a journey of the spirit, a pilgrimage in the truest sense. And in its rugged beauty, C/H and I had found not just breathtaking vistas but a deeper understanding of ourselves and the boundless wonders of the natural world.
But it's not just the days that captivate. As the sun dips below the horizon, the resort transforms again. Campfires crackle to life, casting a warm, inviting glow that beckons all to gather around. It's here, under the cloak of twilight, that guests savour the rich flavours of locally sourced lobster, a tribute to the region's culinary heritage and a nod to the sustainable practices that the resort embraces. This experience, of dining under the stars, of sharing stories and laughter by the fire, fosters a sense of community and connection that's increasingly rare in our fast-paced world.
Beyond the physical activities and the sublime culinary experiences lies the essence of what Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort truly offers: a chance to reconnect with oneself, with others, and with the natural world. It's a sanctuary not just for the body but for the spirit, a place where one can pause, reflect, and grow. Whether you're seeking adventure, tranquillity, or simply a break from the ordinary, Cabot Shores offers a gateway to experiences that resonate deeply, leaving an indelible mark on the heart…
Imagine this: we finally rolled into Halifax, the grand finale of our trip. It was a city buzzing with energy, yet somehow ancient, like its soul was steeped in history. The Star Fort, a giant stone guardian from the past, became our entrance to this incredible place. Here, with the whispers of a bygone era swirling around us, we met Scotty and Sara Richey, our history-loving companions.
They weren't just showing us around; they were time travel guides! Their stories, filled with racist mayors and epic battles, weren't boring facts - they were threads from the past, weaving a beautiful picture that brought history to life.
Our Halifax adventure wasn't just sightseeing; it was a full-on historical quest. The city itself, with its gorgeous waterfront and the famous Star Fort, was a monument to a tough past filled with fights and victories. The Star Fort, perched on a hill like a watchful king, gave us amazing views of the city and the harbour, reminding us of its role as a protector.
The stories Scotty and Sara told weren't just fun; they were a bridge to the city's seafaring history, highlighted by the infamous Privateer's Wharf. Hearing about the privateers and pirates who once sailed these waters made our exploration feel mysterious and exciting.
Halifax's past with the Royal Navy, its wartime importance, and even the fact that it's the final resting place for many Titanic victims added a thoughtful and sombre touch to our trip.
As we wandered the cobblestone streets of the old town and the lively waterfront, Halifax's past and present melded together perfectly. The city buzzed with modern life, from trendy restaurants to art and culture, all happening right next to the historical sites, like the city's own heartbeat. Halifax even had beautiful escapes within the city, from the Public Gardens to Point Pleasant Park, showing a perfect balance between nature and city life.
Our time in Halifax was a kaleidoscope of experiences, from the thrill of historical adventures to the peacefulness of its natural sanctuaries. Scotty and Sara, with their captivating stories, didn't just show us the city's landmarks; they revealed the soul of Halifax, a place where history is alive and breathing. It wasn't just a trip to different places; it was a journey through time, leaving us feeling deeply connected to Halifax's unwavering spirit.
In the waning moments of our odyssey, C/H and I found ourselves at Peggy's Cove, a place where the raw beauty of nature converges with tales of maritime lore. The iconic lighthouse, a sentinel perched atop rugged granite cliffs, stood against the backdrop of the Atlantic, a poignant symbol of solitude and guidance. There, amidst the whisperings of the unforgiving sea and the boundless sky, lay a moment suspended in time, a moment that begged for a connection deeper than the ocean itself.
Why didn't I kiss her then?
The question lingers like the cool maritime breeze, an echo of a missed chord in the symphony of our journey. The ambiance was ripe with enchantment, the kind of spellbinding beauty that urges hearts to leap and stories to unfurl. Perhaps it was the immensity of the ocean, its vastness a mirror to the depth of burgeoning emotions, that rendered words and actions insufficient. Or maybe it was the reverence for the place, a landscape that demanded pause and contemplation, leaving us silent spectators to its majesty.
As the day gave way to night, Halifax's cultural heartbeat became our soundtrack. The pulsating energy of live music, a vibrant thread woven through the fabric of the city, spilled from the pubs, each note a siren call to the joy and camaraderie that defined the maritime spirit. Yet, even as the city around us danced to the rhythm of the night, our moment at Peggy's Cove stood apart, a serene counterpoint to the bustling life of Halifax.
That unseized moment at Peggy's Cove, with its stark beauty and the unspoken words that hung between us, became a poignant reminder of the paths not taken. It underscored the fleeting nature of time and the importance of seizing the moment, of embracing the courage to express our deepest feelings. The lighthouse, a guiding light amidst the tempest, served as a silent witness to our hesitation, a beacon of what could have been.
In reflection, the journey to Peggy's Cove was not just a visit to a landmark; it was a journey into the heart, a confrontation with the uncertainties and what-ifs that define the human experience. The rugged cliffs and the relentless sea were metaphors for the challenges and beauty of vulnerability, urging us to embrace the risk of opening our hearts, even when the outcome is as unpredictable as the Atlantic winds.
It was a lesson not just in the power of place but in the courage to act, to not let moments slip into the sea of forgotten memories.
But our story wasn't confined by the miles we travelled. At the airport, a bittersweet goodbye hung in the air. Imagine two friends saying goodbye at the airport, a mix of sadness and joy hanging in the air. They know their journey together isn't over even though they're parting ways.
Fast forward to the fall of 2012. C/H and I reconnected with each other, completely by chance, at Granville Island in Vancouver. It's almost like fate brought them together again. As they walk around the art galleries, bustling markets, and scenic waterfronts, they realize their trip through the Maritimes wasn't just about sightseeing. It was a journey of self-discovery, a chance to learn more about themselves and each other.
The Maritimes were just one chapter in my story, a chapter that taught me the power of shared experiences and the unknown possibilities that lie ahead. Our adventure is far from over - it's a never-ending voyage of discovery, both of the world and of themselves.
This wasn't the end, but a new chapter waiting to be written. The Maritimes will forever remain etched in our hearts, a reminder of the magic that unfolds when we embrace the unknown and let adventure guide us.
The story of yesman1989.wordpress.com wouldn't just be a travelogue; it would be a chronicle of the intricate dance of human connection, ignited amidst the windswept beauty of the Maritimes.
Looking back from 2024, it feels like I can see all the roads I didn't take with perfect clarity. The Maritimes, with their wild beauty and the constant whisper of the ocean, will always hold a special place in my heart. It wasn't just an adventure, it was a reminder that amazing things happen when you take a chance on the unknown.
Time teaches you a lot.
Now, I understand the hidden meanings in all those glances and conversations we had back then. There were connections I missed, and chances I didn't take. But that's okay. It's part of growing up, realizing that timing and the situation matter, and that you have to be brave enough to grab those moments when they come.
This isn't just a travel blog anymore (yesman1989.wordpress.com). It's a story about the way people connect, the unspoken things that pass between us. The Maritimes made me realize how much our lives are shaped by the people we meet. Every laugh we share, every adventure we take together, adds another piece to the beautiful puzzle of who we are.
This chapter, written from the future, isn't just about the roads not taken. It's about celebrating the fact that I can finally see the dance of attraction between people, all the subtle cues and missed opportunities. It's about the things I did and didn't do, the words I said and left unsaid. Every moment is a chance to learn, to grow, to make a different choice.
This isn't the end. It's a new beginning, a story that keeps getting written with every step I take, every choice I make, and every lesson I learn.
The Maritimes were the stunning backdrop for this journey of self-discovery, but the real adventure is about exploring human connection, embracing our complexities, and the amazing things that happen when we dare to be open to it all.
